Many people have the right idea to start to exercise to lose weight but mistakenly believe that if they get all "gung-ho" that it’s the best exercise. The best exercise to lose weight is the one that you do regularly. Walking needs to become one of your best friends.
Exercise is one of those things that the young seem to be able to excel at with vigour where us "oldies" or "ex-couch-potatoes" need to take carefully. Doing any strenuous exercise suddenly after a long period of inactivity can be really hurtful and dangerous to your health, wealth and well-being.
You need to work into it carefully and if you haven't been active for a long period of time then I suggest you get a complete physical from your Doctor and see if they can actually recommend a physiotherapist first before going straight into a gym class. Slack muscles need to have strengthening exercises before trying to extend them beyond their immediate capabilities. Torn ligaments and muscles hurt, they lay you up and they cost you another visit to your Doctor.
The whole idea of losing weight and exercising is to help you lose weight and is not supposed to make you sicker; so be sure to use a lot of care and work into your exercises carefully.
Don't forget that because you may not have been doing any exercises at all that the fact that you are now doing some is really impressive. This small workout, no matter how small it is, is a heck-of-a-lot-better than what you have been doing in the recent past!
